A facelift is a surgical procedure that alters your facial contours. It changes the way your skin drapes over the underlying facial structures, leaving you looking younger without that “stretched” appearance associated with facelifts from decades ago.
In the hands of a skilled surgeon, a facelift can turn back the hands of time and help you look refreshed and rejuvenated. Advancements in medical technology make facelifts safer and more effective than ever before.
There are several types of facelift procedures to choose from, including a traditional lift, a mini lift, or a short-scar facelift. Some people choose to include procedures like a neck lift or brow lift with their facelift.
Each facelift procedure is unique and addresses your personal needs and goals. Some of the issues a facelift can correct or improve include:
During your personalized consultation at Goldberg Facial Plastic Surgery, you can discuss your treatment goals in detail. Dr. Goldberg lets you know how a facelift can help and explains what to expect from the procedure.
The first step for your facelift is anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. You might receive general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on your needs and preferences.
Once you are resting comfortably, Dr. Goldberg begins by creating an incision. This allows him to access the underlying tissues. He often places incisions at the hairline near your temples, extending behind your ears and into your lower scalp, but you might also need an incision beneath your chin if you have a neck lift at the same time.
Dr. Goldberg then removes or redistributes fat and other tissues to create better facial contouring. He may lift your muscles to improve tone. Once Dr. Goldberg is satisfied with the new contouring, he redrapes your skin and trims away any excess skin.
The incisions are closed using sutures or medical adhesives, and bandaging protects the incision lines as the healing process begins. Once your anesthesia wears off, you continue the healing process at home.
Everyone’s recovery process is unique, but you can expect a degree of swelling and bruising in the days after your procedure. Swelling subsides as the weeks pass, and you receive medication to control any lingering discomfort and to prevent infection.
Within a few months, all swelling should subside, and your incision lines will begin to blend in with the surrounding skin. Once you see the final results, you want to do all you can to extend them. This means embracing daily sun protection and choosing a healthy lifestyle.
Most people achieve outstanding results from just one facelift procedure. In some cases, however, additional procedures may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
